Every vessel in our curated fleet is subject to a stringent safety audit conducted by our Head of Maritime Operations.

All crew members hold STCW (Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers) certifications.
  • Navigation & Communication: Every vessel is equipped with redundant, modern navigation systems (GPS, Radar, Depth Sounder, AIS) and long-range communication equipment, including VHF/SSB radios and satellite phones, ensuring we are always connected, even in the most remote areas.
  • Regular Maintenance: We review detailed maintenance logs for all critical systems, including engines, generators, and dive compressors, to ensure they are serviced according to manufacturer specifications.

Emergency Preparedness & Protocols

We have comprehensive emergency action plans in place for a range of scenarios.

  • Emergency Medical Training: Key crew members on every vessel are certified in Emergency First Response (EFR), including CPR and the administration of emergency oxygen.

Operational Excellence: Our Crew and Vessels

Imagine waking to the gentle lapping of waves against a handcrafted phinisi, the vibrant hues of Raja Ampat’s coral gardens beckoning just beneath the surface. This idyllic vision is underpinned by an unwavering commitment to operational excellence, particularly concerning our expert crew and the meticulous maintenance of our traditional phinisi vessels. Each member of the Phinisi Raja Ampat team, from the seasoned captain navigating the intricate waterways to the attentive chef creating culinary delights, undergoes rigorous training and holds essential certifications. Our captains possess extensive local knowledge, often having spent decades traversing these very waters, complemented by international maritime certifications such as the Certificate of Competency (COC) for navigating commercial vessels. Dive guides and instructors are PADI or SSI certified, ensuring not only an an unforgettable underwater experience but also adherence to the highest international safety protocols for every dive. Furthermore, all crew members are regularly trained in advanced first aid, emergency response, and marine conservation practices, with mandatory annual refreshers to keep their skills sharp and current.

The integrity of our Phinisi Raja Ampat fleet is paramount. These magnificent wooden vessels, often taking 12-18 months to construct by skilled artisans, are not merely beautiful; they are engineered for safety and comfort in remote marine environments. Our maintenance protocols adhere to a strict schedule that often surpasses regulatory requirements, incorporating both traditional craftsmanship and modern maritime engineering. Each phinisi undergoes comprehensive inspections, including hull integrity checks, engine diagnostics, and safety equipment audits, at regular intervals, typically every six months. We equip our vessels with state-of-the-art navigation systems, including radar, GPS, and echo sounders, to ensure precise positioning and obstacle avoidance in Raja Ampat’s often complex reef systems. Redundant communication systems, including satellite phones and VHF radios, guarantee constant connectivity, even in the most secluded corners of the archipelago.

Navigating Raja Ampat’s Pristine Waters Responsibly

The unparalleled biodiversity of Raja Ampat demands not just respect, but active stewardship, and Phinisi Raja Ampat integrates environmental responsibility into every facet of our safety and operational standards. This region, a global epicenter of marine biodiversity, encompasses over 40,000 square kilometers, home to more than 1,500 species of fish and 500 species of coral. Navigating such a precious ecosystem requires specialized knowledge and strict adherence to local and international conservation guidelines. We operate under rigorous anchoring protocols, utilizing designated mooring buoys whenever possible to protect delicate coral reefs, and employing advanced charting to identify safe, sandy anchoring spots when buoys are unavailable. Our waste management systems are designed to minimize environmental impact, with all non-biodegradable waste carefully separated, stored, and transported back to shore for proper disposal, ensuring zero discharge into Raja Ampat’s pristine waters. We actively educate our guests on best practices for interacting with marine life, emphasizing no-touch policies and responsible snorkeling/diving etiquette to preserve the natural beauty for future generations.

Beyond environmental considerations, navigating the specific geographical challenges of Raja Ampat requires exceptional expertise. The region is characterized by strong currents, numerous small islands, and extensive shallow reefs, making precise navigation critical. Our captains leverage their deep understanding of local currents and weather patterns, alongside real-time meteorological data, to plan safe and comfortable itineraries. We maintain a vigilant 24/7 watch while underway, utilizing advanced radar and sonar to detect submerged hazards. Emergency preparedness is a cornerstone of our operational philosophy; each Phinisi Raja Ampat vessel is outfitted with comprehensive medical kits, oxygen supplies, and automated external defibrillators (AEDs), exceeding standard requirements. Our crew conducts regular emergency drills, covering scenarios from fire at sea to medical evacuations, ensuring a swift and coordinated response should any unforeseen event occur. This proactive approach allows our guests to fully immerse themselves in the wonder of Raja Ampat, knowing that their safety is expertly managed
